Submission Guidelines

We publish essays, book and exhibition reviews and artist interviews related to the modern and contemporary art of or relating to California. If you have an idea for a story that falls within the parameters above, we’d love to hear from you. At this time, since our journal is volunteer-led, submissions are compensated with publishing credit only.

Please submit either:

  1. A finished piece of new, previously unpublished writing relating to any of the categories above.

  2. A two-paragraph pitch for a new story including a thesis and outline of ideas to be explored. Please consider the following questions when thinking about your pitch: how does this exhibition/ book/ artist’s work correspond to larger ideas and cultural themes within the context of California, modern and contemporary art history, as well as timely issues today.

If this is your first time submitting to our journal, please also include a little bit about yourself, your work and links to previously published writing (if applicable but not required). For more information on the types of stories we publish, please familiarize yourself with our published articles. Writing should generally be between 800-1500 words.

Please email submissions and any questions to hello@californiaartreview.com
